Piper elected UNWO head

Kathmandu, November 27:

The United Nations Women’s Organisation’s general annual meeting has elected Maggie Piper as its president. Baba Sarkar Shrestha has been elected Vice President, Salma Haq and Soma Pant as Treasurers and Dipti Acharya as Secretary. Other executive members are Jana Thapa and Daljit Sudan.

In countries where there is a UN presence, there usually is UNWO which is governed by an elected Executive Body. UNWO in Nepal deals with social welfare issues of women and children, including environment, education and health. Maggie Piper informed that UNWO, in collaboration with the British Embassy, has donated lithotripter, a medical device to treat kidney stones and gall stones, to Patan Hospital.

The UNWO has been sponsoring the education of a Tharu girl from Dang district and helping with nursing course scholarship for 36 girls from Sushma Nursing Home and Tansen. Besides, 25 women have also received mushroom cultivation training. UNWO, in partnership with UNFPA, Saathi, Nahuda and Patan Hospital has been conducting gender based awareness training for 40 health workers.
