PM Sushil Koirala tries to woo TMDP Chair Thakur
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala , who is scheduled to fly to New York on Wednesday, is meeting the leaders of disgruntled Madhesi-parties on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Koirala met Mahantha Thakur, the chairman of Tarai-Madesh Democratic Party, at the latter’s party office in Bijuli Bazaar and urged the latter to stop the agitation that the United Democratic Madhesi Front launched and come to the table for talks.
On the occasion, Koirala told Thakur that the issues raised by the parties can be resolved through dialogue and by amending the new Constitution.
In response, Thakur maintained that the UDMF resorted to agitation as the major parties did not pay heed to the issues raised by the Madheshi parties and there was no scope for the talks now.
He, however, told Koirala that he would discuss the matter with other constituents of the UDMF.
Protesting the number and demarcation of purported federal units, Madheshi parties had boycotted the final stage of constitution making process at the Constituent Assembly and launched an agitation in Tarai districts. More than 40 people, including security personnel and protesters, have been killed in violent protests since mid-August.
After the promulgation of constitution on Sunday, three major parties- Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN-Maoist- have urged the Madhesi parties to come to the table for talk in order to resolve the issues through dialogue.

It has been learned that Koirala is set to meet meet Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Democratic Chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar.
