KATHMANDU, MAY 21

A family of record-setting Sherpa siblings from Sankhuwasabha returned to a hero's welcome at Tribhuvan International Airport today after successfully summiting Mt Makalu (8,463 metres), the world's fifth-highest peak.

The five climbers - Ang Dawa Sherpa, Muktuk Lhakpa Sherpa, Ngima Dorje Sherpa, Pechumbe Sherpa, and their sister Pasang Yangji Sherpa - reached the summit of Makalu on the morning of May 9. Their feat marks a new milestone in Nepal's mountaineering history as one of the rare instances where five siblings, including a sister, climbed an 8,000-metre peak together.

The expedition also included Anima Sherpa, daughter of Muktuk Lhakpa.

At the airport, the climbers were greeted with traditional khada, flower garlands, and warm congratulations from family members, expedition organisers, and fellow climbers.

The Sherpa siblings are no strangers to record-breaking climbs. On July 27, 2023, Ang Dawa, Muktuk, Ngima Dorje, and Pechumbe became the first four brothers to jointly summit K2, the world's second-highest peak. Their achievement was later recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.
