Kathmandu, April 16

Student unions affiliated to the major political parties warned that they would launch protest programmes if the government did not take action to control the tuition fees of private schools.

Organising a press meet today, the student leaders said they would submit a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tomorrow demanding that the government work to bring down the hiked tuition fees in private schools. The union has also given 72-hour ultimatum to the government to act upon their demand.

The student unions’ warning came after the new school session started yesterday. According to the rule, a private school has to fix the tuition fee three months before the new session starts.  According to President of Nepal Student Union Nain Singh Mahar, “Decreasing fee is not a big deal if the government truly wants to address the issue.”

CPN-UML’s ANNFSU, Nepali Congress’ NSU and CPN Maoist Centre’s  ANNISU-R, and Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal’s FSSF has called for immediate action.
