Sugarcane farmers continue their protest in capital city
KATHMANDU: Sugarcane farmers from Sarlahi district continued their protests in Kathmandu asking the government to help them recover their dues from sugar mills.
They have demanded the government to fulfil the commitment it had made to them.
The government had signed an agreement with the Sugarcane Farmer Struggle Committee on January 1 to recover their due payments within a month. However, the commitment has yet to be fulfilled.
Farmers claim that sugar mills have to pay outstanding dues worth Rs 360 million to around 6,000 sugarcane farmers in Sarlahi district alone.
It has been learnt that the struggle committee is now preparing to take the support of civil society, media, and human rights activists.
