KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 1
For the first time in Supreme Court's history, the court has established a lottery mechanism for cause lists and benches.
The lottery procedure resulted in the formation of ten benches, including two single benches.
Justices Mira Khadka and Kumar Chudal will sit in the two single benches that have been formed as a result of today's lottery draw.
The benches were formed via lottery following the ongoing protest by Nepal Bar Association and other justices against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana. Dissidents have blamed Rana for allegedly seeking to appoint his brother-in-law a minister in the Sher Bahadur Deuba Cabinet and delaying the hearing of cases filed against appointments to constitutional bodies.
The NBA has also accused Rana of stalling judicial reforms.
Meanwhile, the association has demanded that the SC full court amend regulations of district courts, high courts and the Special Court to start lottery-based cause lists in those courts as well.
The Bar has asked its lower chapters to continue their protest in lower courts until the regulations of district courts, high courts, and the Special Court were amended.
