Trafficking-hit enact their woes
KATHMANDU: Survivors of human trafficking Thursday staged a street play titled "Nari"at the residence of US Ambassador Nancy J Powell. Several members of the Constituent Assembly were also present on the occasion.
"The street drama portrays the ordeals we underwent and what thousands of Nepali women are facing. Will you still remain mere spectators or begin to act?" asked an artiste after the enactment of the play that dwelt on issues such as incest, forced pregnancy, human trafficking, rape and domestic violence.
Addressing the function, Powell appealed all the members of the Constituent Assembly to take necessary steps to curb human trafficking. Powell also felicitated Ramila Khatri for making it to the finals of the US Secretary of State's International Women of Courage Award for 2009.
Shrinkhala Thapa of World Education urged Constituent Assembly members to strengthen political will to address the issues of human trafficking and take steps for implementation of existing laws. She said more and more girls were being trafficked to Gulf countries on the pretext of foreign employment. "Even girls below the age of 10 have been trafficked," she said.
