Leaders vow to defend constitutional rights, could approach SC
KATHMANDU, MAY 22
The leaders of opposition alliance have declared that they will take every possible legal and political step to counter Prime Minister and President's unconstitutional, undemocratic move of dissolving the House of Representatives.
In a joint statement issued at the end of a meeting convened earlier today, the leaders expressed their commitment to unitedly defend the constitutional rights of Nepali citizens achieved at the end of years of political struggle.
They further made an appeal to all political and civil forces to condemn and stand against Oli-Bhandari duo's regressive, autocratic intentions.
The statement was signed by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN- Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal, senior leader of CPN-UML Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairperson of Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal Upendra Yadav and Vice-Chair of Rastriya Janamorcha Durga Paudel.
The Prime Minister and the President have been accused of acting irresponsibly at a time when the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic is rampant, leading to even more uncertain and unfavorable circumstances for the people.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the opposition alliance is devising a strategy to approach the Supreme Court with all its lawmakers on Sunday, demanding scrapping of government's decision.
President Bidya Devi Bhandari, on Saturday midnight, dissolved the House of Representatives complying with the Cabinet's recommendation. The President has called early elections, the dates being set for November 12 and November 19.
