Kathmandu, October 14
After several days of lively performances and open-air crowds, Surya Nepal Jazzmandu 2025 took on a calmer tone on Monday evening at Eden in Jhamsikhel with Sounds of Acid Jazz. The venue's amphitheatre-style setup created an intimate space where people sat close to the stage, chatting quietly, sipping drinks, and letting the music wash over them. Compared to the high-energy atmosphere of the previous nights, this one felt slower and more personal, an evening made for listening.
The event began with mohs., the Swiss quartet known for their ambient, textured take on jazz. Their set unfolded patiently, each layer of sound blending seamlessly into the next, setting a reflective mood that suited the cool night air. "It was really nice," said Erwan Valazza, the band's guitarist. "Music-wise, I think today was my favorite. I had more feelings on stage tonight. But as a tourist, I loved the first few days. We got to see a lot of Kathmandu before the music got busy."
Following mohs. was Leona Berlin, who continued the night with her signature mix of soul, R&B, and jazz-infused rhythms. Her smooth vocals filled the courtyard, balancing depth and calm. The audience responded with quiet focus, a few heads nodding in time, some people swaying slightly in their seats.
Adding to the relaxed atmosphere, several artists who had performed in earlier Surya Nepal Jazzmandu events, including Catia Werneck Quartet, Cadenza Collective, and Nick Aggs, were spotted among the audience, enjoying the show like everyone else.
For Monica, a visitor from Australia attending Surya Nepal Jazzmandu for the first time, the experience was spontaneous but memorable. "Two other guests at my hostel just asked, 'Do you wanna come?' and I said, 'Yeah,'" she said, laughing. "I'm really glad I did though, I'm having a great time."
As the final chords faded, people lingered in small groups, reluctant to leave the mellow space Eden had become for the night.
The festival is now moving toward its final day, October 15, when The Jazzmandu Finale at The Malla Hotel will bring together all participating artists for one last performance, a collective celebration of music, improvisation, and the spirit that has carried the festival through the week.
