10 days on, no respite from Tarai stir

DHANGADHI:Life in Tarai districts was affected on the 10th straight day on Friday due to the indefinite bandh called by Tharuhat Joint Struggle Committee (TJSC). Defying the bandh, Kailali-based businessmen, students and civil society members took out a rally from Campus Road, converging at LN chowk. Markets were partially open following the meet.UCPN-Maoist-affiliated Tharu Rastriya Mukti Morcha (TRMM) has warned of acting against the TJSC bandh. TRMM has blamed TJSC of abducting its member Khusiram Chaudhari, while TJSC district coordinator Bhanuram Chaudhari blamed the Maoists of trying to foil their agitation.In Sunsari, TJSC cadres demonstrated in Duhabi, Khanar and Jhumka defying the prohibitory order issued by local administration. They also staged a sit-in in Duhabi and restricted the movement of vehicles there. Bandh enforcers vandalised five vehicles in Jhumka today and set Bhaluwa VDC office afire last night.Over 800 stranded vehicles were escorted to their destinations on Koshi and East-West highways, Sunsari police said.In Nawalparasi, baton-wielding agitators demonstrated in various places. Vehicles plied on rural roads though.

In Dang, the agitators set fire on Tarigaun VDC office last night. Agitating Tharuhat activists set ablaze Baijpur VDC office in Banke. Vehicles plying on short and long routes stayed off the roads in the district today.
