KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 17

As many as 1,100 delegates have cast their votes in the ongoing election for new leadership at the 11th National Congress of the CPN (UML).

According to Sanuraj Pokharel, vice-chairperson of the UML Central Election Commission, around 1,100 delegates had voted as of 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the congress venue, Bhrikutimandap. Voting began at 9:12 am on Wednesday morning.

Pokharel said that individual voting time ranged from nine minutes to two hours and five minutes, with an average of 25 to 30 minutes per voter. He added that arrangements have been made to allow all delegates who enter the voting centre by 8:00 pm to cast their ballots.

The leadership contest features panels led by incumbent Chairperson KP Sharma Oli and Senior Vice-Chairperson Iswor Pokharel.

A total of 642 candidates have filed nominations for 301 central committee positions. The election is being conducted using eight electronic voting machines.

The results will be announced within two hours of the conclusion of voting, Pokharel said.

Altogether, 2,263 delegates are participating in the UML National Congress.
