Some 168 candidates have had their election deposits forfeited in Rautahat during the recently held parliamentary and provincial elections. A total of 67 persons had filed their candidacies from four parliamentary constituencies in the district.

According to District Election Officer Chhotelal Das, 58 of 67 candidates have had their deposits forfeited. Constituency-wise, 17 candidates had filed their candidacies from Constituency-1. Of them, 15 have forfeited their election deposit.

Similarly, 11 candidates of Constituency-2, and an equal 16 candidates of Constituency-3 and Constituency-4 forfeited their election deposits.

On the provincial front, a total of 135 persons had contested in the provincial election across the district. Of them, 110 candidates forfeited their deposits.

In Rautahat, a total of 282,430 votes were cast under the parliamentary election category. Of them, 12,880 votes, which make up 4.5 per cent of the total ballots cast, were declared invalid.

Similarly, of the total 281,769 votes cast for the provincial assembly election, 9,398 votes (3.33 per cent) were invalid.

"Candidates wishing to contest in the parliamentary and provincial assembly elections were required to keep a deposit of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.

Those candidates who received less than 10 per cent of the total valid votes cast have had their deposits forfeited," Das said.
