KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 26

A total of 4,561 criminal cases were registered across the country in the month of Magh in the current fiscal year 2082/83, according to Nepal Police.

The Kathmandu Valley recorded the highest number of cases at 1,337.

Among the provinces, Koshi Province registered 775 cases, followed by Madhesh Province with 704, Lumbini Province with 573, Bagmati Province with 388, Gandaki Province with 367 and Sudurpaschim Province with 258. Karnali Province reported the lowest with 159 cases.

Top 10 offences registered

Banking offences topped the list of reported crimes with 1,017 cases, accounting for 22.29% of the total registrations.

Offences against public interest, health, safety, convenience and morality stood at 563 cases (12.34%), while suicide-related cases numbered 494 (10.83%). Drug-related offences reached 436 (9.56%), and 380 cases (8.33%) were categorised as accidental deaths. Theft cases totalled 364 (7.98%), followed by vehicular homicide at 189 (4.14%), criminal trespass and disorder-related offences at 180 (3.95%), fraud at 169 (3.71%) and homicide cases at 167 (3.66%).

Category-wise crime data

By broader classification, miscellaneous cases constituted the largest share at 1,106 (24.25%). Organised and economic crimes accounted for 672 cases (14.73%), while homicide-related cases stood at 669 (14.67%).

Similarly, 792 cases (17.36%) were categorised as social crimes. Suicide-related cases numbered 494 (10.83%), while 224 cases (4.91%) were registered as crimes against women and children.

Theft-related cases totalled 364 (7.98%), and vehicle-related offences reached 240 (5.26%).

According to Nepal Police, the number of cases registered in Magh declined by 4.16 per cent compared to the previous month.
