49,071 candidates to contest in first phase of polls: EC

KATHMANDU: As many as 49,071 candidates have filed their nominations for the first phase of local level elections taking place in 34 districts of three provinces - 3, 4 and 6 - on May 14.

The Election Commission data shows that 1,925 people have filed their candidacies for the posts of municipality mayor and rural municipality chief from across 283 local- levels.

The number of candidates vying for the posts of municipality deputy mayor and rural municipality deputy chief is 1,429.

Likewise, 10,841 candidates are contesting for the posts of ward chairs, 18371 for the ward member (open category), 9,033 for the women member and 7,472 for the posts of dalit member from the Dalit quota, according to EC Joint-Secretary and Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma.

There are four metropolitan cities, one sub metropolis, 92 municipalities and 186 rural municipalities in these three provinces.

Similarly, candidate nominations have been registered for the seats of 2,598 ward chairs including 123 in metropolitan cities, 19 in the sub-metropolis city, 1,091 in municipalities and 1,365 in rural municipalities.

More, nominations have been filed for the seats of 10,392 ward members.

The total number of voters for the first round of elections is 4,956,925 and would cast their votes from 6642 polling stations.
