602 contesting elections for 63 seats in Province 1

There are 602 candidates in the fray for 63 seats from the seven districts of Tarai and hilly region in Province 1.

A total of 2,274,216 voters are eligible to cast votes on December 7. Voters of the remaining seven districts of mountainous region cast their votes on November 26.

Data at the Regional Election Office Biratnagar show that 225 candidates are vying for 21 parliamentary seats while 377 candidates are contesting for 42 seats in the provincial assembly.

Of the 14 districts of Province 1, polls were held in Solukhumbu, Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, Panchthar and Khotang in the first phase. The polls in Ilam, Udayapur, Terhathum, Dhankuta, Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari will be held on Thursday.

Among the districts where polls will be held on December 7, Morang has the highest number of voters. As many as 108 candidates are in the poll fray for 12 seats in the provincial assembly and 61 candidates are contesting for six parliamentary seats.

Voters will elect 28 parliamentary members and 56 provincial assembly members in the province. As many as 287 candidates are in the fray for parliamentary seats and 470 are contesting for provincial assembly seats in the province.
