KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 9
Adverse weather has hampered efforts to recover the bodies of five Russian climbers who died while attempting to summit Mt. Dhaulagiri.
The mountaineers were found at an altitude of 7,100 meters, but the challenging weather conditions and rugged terrain have made it difficult for helicopters to land and for rescuers to access the site on foot.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bharat Shrestha, a police team along with Sherpas flew to Dhaulagiri but had to return after surveying the site due to inclement weather.
The remains of Russian climbers Alexander Dusheyko, Oleg Kruglov, Vladimir Chistikov, Mikhail Nosenko, and Dmitri Shpilevol were discovered on Tuesday.
The group of 14 male Russian climbers had embarked on the expedition through IM Trekking and Expedition. Nine of them aborted their climb and descended safely.
Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh-highest peak at 8,167 meters, is situated in Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality-4 of Myagdi District. As per the Tourism Department, 14 Russian nationals had received permits to climb the mountain this autumn.
