Agitating Madhesi parties to return to House, to protest and exert pressure on govt

KATHMANDU: The agitating Madhesi parties affiliated with the United Democratic Madhesi Front will return to the Parliament on Sunday to exert pressure on the government and others to fulfil their demands.

The House meeting is scheduled for 11 am tomorrow.

The lawmakers of four parties -- Federal Social Forum-Nepal, Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party, Nepal Sadbhawana Party  and Tarai-Madhesh Sadbhawana Party -- will protest in the Parliament tomorrow to strengthen the street agitation, Manish Kumar Suman of Nepal Sadbhawana Party informed.

A meeting of the four parties, which have as many as 35 lawmakers, took decision today to launch agitation in the Parliament also, according to leaders.

The UDMF's meeting scheduled for 10 am tomorrow will make further decision on the strategy, according to Sarvendra Nath Shukla of Tarai Madhesh Democratic Party.

He informed that the protest can include obstruction of the House business also.

Likewise, Sadbhawana Party Co-Chairman Laxman Lal Karna said lawmakers have planned to explain their demands in detail to the House before picketing the rostrum.

Shukla further said the UDMF will wait to see Nepali Congress' take on the provincial boundaries to decide whether to collaborate with the largest party in the House or not.

The Madhesi parties, including the ones affiliated with UDMF and Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar-led Federal Democratic Alliance, had walked out of the Constituent Assembly before the promulgation of new Constitution, expressing their reservations over some provisions in the yet-to-be promulgated Constitution and the purported demarcation of provincial boundaries.

The parties, however, returned to the Parliament to take part in the prime ministerial election on October 11. The UDMF lawmakers voted for Nepali Congress candidate Sushil Koirala, while Gachhadar's party Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Democratic supported KP Sharma Oli and took part in the government subsequently.

Later, the UDMF constituents did not join the House business to vote in the elections of Speaker, Deputy Speaker, President and Vice-President.
