KATHMANDU, APRIL 20

An Indian climber, who was rescued alive from a deep crevasse of Mt Annapurna this morning, has been airlifted to Kathmandu from Pokhara for further treatment.

Anurag Maloo, 34, is being treated at Lalitpur-based Medicity Hospital, Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks informed. Nepal Army chopper airlifted Anurag from Manipal Hospital at around 3:15 pm.

Earlier, doctors at Manipal College and Teaching Hospital in Pokhara referred him to Kathmandu for further treatment.

A team of rescuers found Anurag in a deep crevasse below Camp III of the world's tenth-highest peak this morning. Anurag has gone missing since Monday after he fell into a crevasse from 5,800m while descending from Camp III on Mt Annapurna. Anurag has been found alive but he is in a very critical stage, said Anurag's brother Sudhir.

A team of six Sherpa climbers led by Chhang Dawa Sherpa from Seven Summit Treks conducted a ground search and found him in some 300m deep crevasse this morning. The rescue team comprising Tashi Sherpa, Chhepal Sherpa, Lakpa Nurbu Sherpa, Dawa Nurbu Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa from SST conducted the riskiest-ever rescue mission from the Annapurna crevasse, said Mingma.

Renowned Polish alpinist Adam Bielecki and his fellow climber Mariusz Hatala also joined the ground search and rescue team to locate Anurag.

After rescuing Anurag from the deep crevasse, he was airlifted to Pokhara-based Manipal Hospital for emergency treatment. Later in the afternoon, he was referred to Kathmandu for further treatment, he added.

Anurag attempted to scale Annapurna this season on a mission to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres and the seven highest points in all seven continents. He has been awarded REX Karam- Veer Chakra. He also became the 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador from India.
