KATHMANDU, AUGUST 30
The Australian government has provided AUD 2 million to support the UN World Food Programme's (WFP) emergency food assistance and logistics operations for communities affected by the devastating floods in northern Nepal.
The contribution will help WFP provide life-saving food assistance and transport relief supplies to flood-affected communities, particularly in Rasuwa and downstream districts where damaged roads, bridges and other infrastructure have disrupted access.
WFP has already dispatched 2.4 metric tonnes of ready-to-eat food, including high-energy biscuits, for families without access to cooking facilities. It is also transporting relief supplies to affected areas through air and ground operations.
WFP Nepal Representative and Country Director Riaz Lodhi said the Australian support would help the agency and its partners deliver urgent assistance and strengthen government-led response efforts.
Australian Ambassador to Nepal Simon Ernst expressed condolences to the victims of the disaster, saying the contribution reflected Australia's commitment to supporting communities affected by disasters across the region.
WFP is coordinating with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Ministry of Home Affairs, local authorities, UN agencies and humanitarian partners to assess needs and deliver assistance. Additional personnel, food supplies and logistics assets remain on standby as humanitarian needs evolve.
