RAMECHHAP, NOVEMBER 3

The demand for madal has increased with the beginning of Tihar festival in Ramechhap.

Most of the madal makers are busy striving to meet the demand. "The madals are mostly supplied to the village area," said a madal trader.

The musical instrument is used for playing Deusi-bhailo during Tihar, the festival of light in the country.

People from the Badi community residing in more than five rural municipalities of the district make madals. Badi people of Khimti, Bhatauli, Manthali and Ramechhap, among other places, are in this occupation.

The local Badi people make madals using locally available raw materials. These locally made madals are attractive and durable.

Jabbar Bahadur Badi, a trader, said that they used locally available raw materials to make madals.

He added that many Badi people had left this occupation due to lack of raw materials, and as a result, the demand for madals could not be met.

The Badis complained that they had not received any support from the government to promote the locally made madals. Jabbar also said that he could make 10 madals in a day, but it was not enough to meet the demand.
