RAMECHHAP, JULY 14

Bangladesh's Ambassador to Nepal Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury said his government was positive about investing in the Sunkoshi III Hydropower Project.

Speaking at a programme during a field observation of the proposed Sunkoshi III project site in Khadadevi Rural Municipality of Ramechhap today, the ambassador conveyed his government's willingness to invest in the reservoir-based project. The proposed 683MW project will be developed in Lubughat of Khadadevi.

The envoy was accompanied by Nepal Electricity Authority's Executive Director Kulman Ghising along with officials of the Energy Ministry during the observation visit of the project's proposed dam site, powerhouse site and the project-affected region.

He made his remarks following the visit.

Speaking on the occasion, NEA Executive Director Ghising informed that there had been frequent talks with the Bangladeshi government to start work on the project.

"We've had talks with the Bangladesh government to start the project and we will soon have a team of technicians from the country here," he revealed.

Ghising also added that there were also talks to include India in the project. "As big projects like Sunkoshi III have double benefits of tourism as well as hydropower, it's desirable that we complete such projects as soon as possible," he opined.

On the occasion, Electricity Development Department General Director Sanjeev Dev said the study of the project by his department had reached the final phase.

As per the plan, the 683MW project will have its dam at Lubhughat in the Sunkoshi River on the confluence of Ramechhap and Kavre. The dam will be 160 metres wide and 180 metres high.

Water from the dam will be channelled through 2.4 metre-long tunnels to the production house at Titretar of Temal Rural Municipality in Kavre. The power to be produced from the project will be linked to the national transmission line.
