BIRGUNJ: Goods are smoothly entering Nepal via Birgunj from India as the Raxaul-based Indian customs have allowed carts ferrying them to cross the border. Cargo vehicles, however, have not entered Nepal.

The border entry point witnessed a virtual standstill after the United Democratic Madhesi Front resorted to border obstruction following the promulgation of Constitution four months ago. The supporters and cadres of agitating Madhesi parties have been staging a sit-in protest at the Miteri Pul, the bridge that adjoins Nepal and India since September 24.

According to Sushil Sharma, the spokesperson of Nepal's Customs Office in Birgunj, import resumed since this week. He informed that about Rs 3 million is being collected on a daily basis.

Numerous carts laden with different goods, including clothes, shoes, different hardware and plastic, crossed the border on Saturday night.

Importers are clearing the customs on the Indian side at day time and bring in the goods to Nepal on carts at nights. When the carts cross the border and pass by the Miteri Pul, the UDMF cadres do not obstruct them.

The number of protesters taking part in the sit-in at the no man's land along the Nepal-India border has decreased of late.

Border entry points in other districts have already opened.
