Mucormycosis, commonly known as black fungus, has claimed the life of a person getting treated at Seti Zonal Hospital, Kailali, on Thursday.

The deceased, a 65-year-old male from Tulsipur, Bardagoriya-6, was admitted to the hospital on May 31, shared Information Officer of the hospital, Dilip Kumar Shrestha.

Shrestha added that he was diagnosed with mucormycosis on Wednesday. However, the patient's Covid-19 report was negative.

According to Shrestha, this is the first instance of a mucormycosis fatality in Seti Hospital.

Mucormycosis is a very rare but a serious infection, the most likely cause of which is mucor mould (mucormycetes) that lives throughout the environment. The infection mainly affects people with low immunity due to some pre-existing health condition such as diabetes or cancer.
