CCTV cameras reinstalled in Birgunj

Birgunj, October 1

A local organisation, Safer Birgunj, has started reinstalling CCTV cameras damaged by the agitators during the Madhes unrest, in collaboration with the District Police Office, Parsa in the sub-metropolis.

Till date, the organisation has installed CCTV cameras at 29 places, including Ghantaghar, Maisthan, Adarshanagar, Makalu Hotel Chowk and the road leading to Thakurram Campus.

Safer Birgunj’s Ganesh Lath said that his organisation had installed 40 cameras along the main road leading to the entry and exit points and major areas in the sub-metropolis at the cost of Rs 1.4 million. Lath said that cameras began to operate from today.

Lath said they plan to make Birgunj safer after installing 100 cameras within a year, and they had estimated the cost from Shankarcharya Dwar to Laxmanwa Chowk through Gandak Chowk at Rs 8 million.

Lath added that they had devised the plan to install CCTV cameras across Birgunj with financial support from various organisations and FNCCI, Birgunj. The surveillance of the cameras can be made from the two locations —  District Police Office, Parsa and the Police Headquarters, Naxal, Kathmandu.

Of the 72 installed cameras, 68 were broken and damaged by the agitators during Madhes agitation last year. A source at the DPO said that reinstalling the cameras would help the police check criminal activities.
