CIAA clean chit for IGP, senior cops

KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) today gave clean chit to Ramesh Chand Thakuri, Inspector General of Nepal Police, and other senior police officers.

The anti-graft body was looking into alleged irregularities of Thakuri and the other police officers over controversial parka jacket purchase deal.

The other high-ranking police officials getting the CIAA clean chits are Deputy Inspector General Ramesh Bikram Shah, Senior Superintendent of Police Shyam Bahadur Khadka, Superintendent of Police Manoj Neupane, Deputy Superintendents of Police Ganesh Regmi, Siddhi Bikram Shah, Tej Narayan Sharma and Inspectors Sita Ram Chapagain and Shambhu Dhakal.

Lalit Bahadur Limbu, Acting Chief Commissioner, CIAA, however, said that serious warnings, as per the section 12 of the CIAA Act, 2002, were issued against the Thakuri and other not to flout the Public Procurement Act while purchasing such goods in future. "Since they have cancelled the tender and there were no irregularities in the deal, we didn't take action against them," Limbu added.

The CIAA had begun its probe into the parka jacket purchase deal that included the financial transaction of more than Rs 100 million.

The Nepal Police had accepted a tender bid of Anand Trade Concern to supply about 57,000 jackets to its personnel. Another bidder, who had offered about half the amount, had lodged a complaint at the CIAA claiming of irregularities in the tender process.
