The splinter group aims to rally twice as much support in the counter show-of-strength

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 9

The Dahal-Nepal splinter group of the Nepal Communist Party has called for a mass-gathering at Bhrikutimandap on Wednesday to counter Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's 'show-of-strength' on February 5 that had scored of Oli-supporters in attendance.

Top leaders of the dissenting faction will lead the rallies which will simultaneously begin from major intersections in the capital including Pulchowk, Maitighar Mandala, Keshar Mahal, Tripureshwor and Jamal to eventually converge at Bhrikutimandap.

The mass rally scheduled for Wednesday is being held as part of its third phase of the protest against dissolution of the House of Representatives by the Oli-government.

Earlier on February 5, supporters of PM Oli had organised a similar event, a show-of-strength, wherein thousands of people had gathered. Oli and other senior figures in the faction had addressed the gathering.

On December 20, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had decided to dismantle the lower house while also announcing polls in April-May 2021. PM Oli's decision, which has been labelled as 'autocratic' by dissenting political leaders was swiftly approved by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, putting her intentions into questioning.

The decision has caused political instability and much chaos nation-wide as series of demonstrations are being frequently organized by political parties both in support and condemnation of the move.
