DIG Nawaraj Silwal 'taken in custody' by Nepal Police HQ

KATHMANDU: Multiple sources said that a team deployed from Nepal Police headquarters on Monday morning took Deputy Inspector General Nawaraj Silwal in custody along with his lawyer Shambhu Thapa from the latter's house in Baluwatar.

Police personnel had gone to arrest DIG Silwal, who was holding legal consultation with Thapa, advocate Tikaram Bhattarai said, "And when Thapa protested saying he would not let them arrest his client from his house, they asked him to come along with Silwal."

Claiming that he has to be appointed the Inspector General of the police force, DIG Silwal, who had earlier got Jaya Bahadur Chand's appointment as the Nepal Police chief revoked from the Supreme Court, has resorted to the apex court once again challenging the government decision to appoint Prakash Aryal as the IGP.

He, however, faces charges of manipulating the records of internal evaluation of four DIGs who were contenders for the top cop post.

DIG Bijaya Kumar Bhatta-led five-member panel formed as per the Cabinet's decision to look into the allegation had been repeatedly summoning DIG Silwal for recording his statement. He, however, had not responded to it.

The Nepal Police headquarters sources said DIG Silwal was arrested for investigation into the case in which is accused of forging records in order for his own benefit.
