Finland wants rights, democracy back: Envoy

Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of Finland in Nepal Pauli Mustonen today said Finland would continue support Nepal for the restoration of rule of law and good-governance. Speaking at a programme organised by the Transparency International Nepal, Helping Group in Pokhara, Pauli said Finland believes in the supremacy of the rule of law and extends support for the same. The people of Finland and the Finnish government believe in the supremacy of law and the natural function of law is to help and protect helpless people in every circumstances, he said. He added that the restoration of the supremacy of law and good-governance are the wishes of the Finnish government for Nepal.

Pauli said, the royal takeover on February 1 was not supporting democracy in Nepal. Talking to journalists he said Finland wants to see democracy and civil liberties restored in Nepal. He was of the view that peace and democracy cannot be separated. But, in any circumstances, Finland would continue support Nepal for restoration of democracy, development of human rights and the improvement in the lives of women, and back-warded people and environment conservation, he added. On the occasion, Pauli gave away the ‘Investigative Journalism Award-2061’ to Ram Krishna Gyawali, the editor of a local daily.
