Garbage woes plague Manthali Municipality
Ramechhap, August 24
Manthali Municipality in Ramechhap is facing garbage management challenge due to lack of proper landfill site.
Garbage collection has been disrupted after the road leading to Ranajor khola where garbage was being dumped was swept away by flood. The municipality has not been able to collect waste for the last four days.
Garbage had started piling up in Manthali bazaar after the flood damaged the road. Employees at the municipality said waste management had become a difficult task due to poor condition of the road leading to the dumping site.
A search is on to find out a dumping site for a long time in Manthali. A study was conducted to look for a dumping site at Karambot, Bandre, Kokakhola, Sukajor Khola, Kalapnai Khola and Kapchepani. However, construction of landfill site could not begin due to locals’ protest.
Former Manthali VDC chair Dhruba Kumar Karki said that they had failed to implement the plan despite several rounds of discussion.
After Manthali was declared a municipality, a proposal was put forward to build a landfill site near Badimuhan. The place can hold garbage produced in the municipality for 50 years, according to a study.
Mayor Ramesh Kumar Basnet said no budget had been allocated for construction of the dumping site this fiscal.
