KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 3

Minister of Women, Children and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi said all three tiers of the government should be sensitive to the issues of people with disabilities.

At a programme organised by the National Disabled Fund on the occasion of 31st International Day of Persons with Disabilities here today, Minister Regmi said the local government should be more responsible and sensitive for service delivery to PWDs in remote areas.

The federal and province governments are required to work by allocating budget to work for the cause of people with physical disabilities, Minister Regmi added.

She said the ministry was serious about the concerns raised about the negligence of the local levels regarding services and facilities to the PWDs.

During the programme, member of the National Assembly and Chair of Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee Prakash Pantha said the Fund should give priority to the development of support materials for those with physical disabilities.

Local governments should supply support materials to the PWDs at their doorsteps, Pantha said, adding that complaints were filed regarding poor service delivery from local bodies.

Pantha also expressed concern about the misuse of identity cards given to people with disabilities in recent days.

The ministry's Secretary Dilliram Sharma, the Fund's President Dekraj Bhattarai and others also expressed their views on the need of cooperation among the three tiers of government for ensuring more support to the PWDs.
