KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 28

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has assured that the government is seriously working to address the problems of victims of usury, microfinance, and cooperatives.

In today's meeting of the National Assembly's National Concern and Coordination Committee, PM Dahal asserted that the government is committed to addressing the issues of usury victims and is making efforts to form a high-powered commission and enact legislation to resolve the problems.

The court is yet to issue verdicts on some usury-related cases, according to the PM. Towards this end, he urged the court to facilitate these cases, considering the sensitivity of the issues and cases.

The Head of Government stated, "The problems have originated in the legal sphere, not within the government. To resolve them, the court process must be completed. As laws could favor perpetrators based on old documents and legal evidence (Tamsuk), the government and the court will work together to resolve them according to the nature of the transactions."

Victims from these sectors have been staging phased protests in recent months. During the occasion, the PM mentioned that talks were held with concerned agencies and stakeholders.

Responding to lawmakers' concerns, the PM stated that the government is working in a planned manner to expedite the development of the Kathmandu-Tarai Madhes Expressway, advance construction of the Sunkoshi Marin Diversion, take initiatives to resolve issues of British Gurkhas, rescue Nepali youths recruited illegally into Russian military service, and table the Civil Servant Bill.

Concerned agencies have been directed to formulate the upcoming 16th periodic plan, government policies and programs, and prepare budgets by prioritizing the Committee's directives, according to the PM.

During the meeting, Committee Chairperson Dil Kumari Rawal (Parbati) reminded the PM about the Committee's directives on intergovernmental relations, national heritage, human rights, foreign affairs, national pride projects, national security, constitutional commissions, and others.
