Halt SC hearings till polls: NBA

Kathmandu, March 26:

The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) today urged the Supreme Court and the subordinate courts to suspend hearing for two weeks to let the lawyers go for observation and campaigning for the April 10 CA election.

The NBA urged the courts to suspend hearing from March 28 to April 12.

Several lawyers are engaged as election observers while many of them have filed candidacies in the first-past-the-post election or have been nominated candidates by the parties for the proportionate representation system in the CA election.

The SC has informed that a decision to this regard would be taken after discussing the matter with the apex court judges.

“We are yet to take any formal decision in this regard because we have already scheduled hearing of several cases for the coming many months,” SC spokersperson Til Prasad Shrestha said.

“Several lawyers who have filed their candidacies or are in one or the other way involved with the election, have individually requested the courts to consider suspending hearings for the election,” advocate Balkrishna Neupane, a candidate of constituency no 1 of Kathmandu district from Rastriya Janashakti Party, said.

Meanwhile, in a press statement issued today, the NBA has urged everyone to help hold the CA elections in a free and fair manner and has stressed on the need for an environment conducive for holding the election.

It has also flayed attacks on candidates and party cadres and has urged the parties to respect the election code of conduct.

“The CA election should be held with free and fair manner and all criminal activities must stop at the earliest,” the press release issued by NBA president Bishwokanta Mainali stated.

“Obstruction of the CA polls will affect the future of the nation and the political parties will be held responsible for the failure of the state,” he said in the statement.
