Heavy snowfall paralyses life in Khumjung

SOLUKHUMBU: Normal life in Khumjung area of Solukhumbu district is severely paralysed due to heavy snowfall from Sunday.

The Area Police Office, Namche, said that all the settlements in Khumjung Valley are covered with as high as three-foot snow.

The locals said that the roofs of at least four houses have been collapsed after the snowfall and water supplies in most of the houses has come to a halt.

A yak farmer, Sonam Sherpa, said that they have faced difficulties to feed the yaks and other animals as the sheds have been covered with the snow.

Likewise, tourists arriving in Khumbu area have been locked inside the hotels following the snowfall while the mobility of the people is almost nil as all hotels and shops are closed, local businessman Lhakpa Tamang said.

It is said that the temperature has dipped to minus 6 degrees Celsius, forcing the locals to remain inside their houses.

Pasang Sherpa, a worker who has been residing in Khumjung region for decades, said that Khumjung witnessed the heaviest snowfall this time.
