LAMJUNG, JANUARY 21

Honey production in the hilly district of Lamjung has seen a significant rise this year, with an increase of 29.6 tonnes compared to the previous year. According to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre (AKC), Lamjung, a total of 129.17 tonnes of honey was produced this year from 17,197 beehives.

Saroj Thapa, Information Officer at AKC Lamjung, shared that farmers in the district have sold honey at Rs 1,500 per kilogram this year. The sale of honey has earned farmers a total of Rs 180 million this year, a significant boost compared to the previous year's earnings.

Last year, 111.3 tonnes of honey was produced from 13,850 beehives, with honey sold at Rs 900 to Rs 1,000 per kilogram, resulting in earnings of more than Rs 90 million. The production of honey in the district has steadily increased over the years, with 32 tonnes produced from 10,025 beehives in 2079 BS, 30 tonnes from 11,500 hives in 2078 BS, and 38 tonnes from 11,100 hives in 2077 BS.

The highest honey production in the district this year came from Sundarbazar Municipality, where 36,000 kg of honey was produced from 4,500 beehives, generating an income of Rs 54 million. Honey produced in Lamjung is supplied to markets in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, and other areas.

Farmers in the district have increasingly adopted modern beekeeping practices, utilizing modern beehives and technology to improve production.

According to the Nepal Beekeepers' Federation, District Branch, Sundarbazar Municipality, Besisahar Municipality, and Marsyangdi Rural Municipality are the leading honey-producing areas in Lamjung. The district branch of the Federation has more than 382 beekeepers as members.
