House discusses motion on frequent fatal road accidents

KATHMANDU: The Parliament on Sunday began discussions on a motion of public importance about frequent fatalĀ road accidents in Nepal.

Earlier, CPN-UML lawmaker Rabindra Adhikari had registered the motion demanding that the House hold deliberations over the issue as hundreds of people are killed in road accidents every year.

Tabling his proposal at the House before discussions today, the lawmaker said the government failed to control irregularities in the transport sector and ensure implementation of the laws prepared for safety of people.

The UML leader said the government could not and should not relieve itself of its responsibility to regulate the transport sector by pointing the finger at drivers, traffic police or transport entrepreneurs or their syndicates for increasing road accidents.

"Breaking down the syndicate system is not only the solution," he said, arguing that new syndicate systems would be developed after breaking down of the other if the government was weak.

"If our management is wrong, the syndicate will overtake," he questioned, "Does the government want to be ruled by the illegal system or a scientific transport management?"

Claiming that the loss of human life in road accidents in Nepal was larger and more serious that what the nation lost in the decade-long Maoist insurgency, he further demanded that the government strictly implement rules and regulations existing in the transportation sector.

Lawmakers Ganesh Kumar Pahadi and Shivaji Yadav had seconded the proposal.

Taking part in the discussion, lawmakers Aman Lal Modi, Dilnath Giri, Banshidhar Mishra, Ramhari Subedi, Ananta Prasad Paudel, Ram Kumar Bhattarai, Nawaraj Sharma, Ambar Bahadur Thapa, Gita Chhetri, Yogendra Chaudhary, Kamala Kumari Ghimire, Mina Pun, Aasha Koirala, Nisha Kumari Shah and Prem Suwal among others had urged the government to take effective measures to control road accidents.

Earlier, speaking at the House, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi had informed the House about recent road accident cases in various parts of the nation including in Kavrepalanchok, Baitadi and Chitwan districts.

The DPM had claimed that the government had recently directed concerned authorities to strictly implement the traffic and transport rules and take actions against the violators to ensure safety of passengers.
