Speaker wants bills by mid-May

Kathmandu, April 11

House of Representative Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has requested Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to make sure necessary bills are tabled in the Parliament before the budget session starts in the second week of May.

“I have told the PM that the government should give business to the House. For that, the bills should come to the House before the next session,” Speaker Mahara told mediapersons today. As per the constitutional provision, various bills should be endorsed as soon as possible.

The constitution also  states that the budget should be announced on May 29 every year and the government’s policy and programme should be presented to the House 15 days before the budget. Pre-budget discussion should be held seven days before the presentation of policy and programme.

“The next House session will start in the second week of May,” Mahara said, adding that the prime minister will address the house once every 15 days and at least two ministers will address the house once a week as per the new Parliament procedure regulation, which is being drafted. The regulation will be endorsed in the next session and the secretariat has proposed seven parliamentary committees, he said.

Mahara also made it clear that he no longer belonged to the CPN-Maoist Centre party. “I resigned from the party immediately after my election to the speaker’s post,” Mahara said. “I will play a balanced role and will keep myself away from party politics.”
