House panel takes government to task on relief work

KATHMANDU: The parliamentary National Disaster Management, Monitoring and Direction Special Committee on Tuesday sought clarification from the government regarding anomalies in relief distribution.

As per the recommendation of its sub-committee, the Special Committee led by Speaker Subas Chandra Nembang on Tuesday directed the Home Ministry to inform the special committee about the investigation into attempts to sell 300 bundles of corrugated zinc sheets provided by Nepal Investment Bank Ltd for some schools of Nuwakot within three days of completing the probe.

Members of the special committee also questioned the intention of the government while transferring Nuwakot chief district officer, who was conducting the investigation into the case that allegedly involves one of the government’s most powerful ministers. Responding to the lawmakers, Home Minister Bamdev Gautam said, “Transferring CDOs is a regular task and investigation will continue.”

Nembang also directed the government to make public the probe report prepared by National Vigilance Centre regarding tarpaulin sheets and tents bought by the Ministry of Urban Development and inform the special committee about the report’s conclusion, recommendations and implementation within a week.

Tuesday’s meeting of the special panel also directed the government to implement NVC recommendations if they were yet to be implemented and inform the committee.

The meeting directed the government to inform the special committee about the Social Welfare Council’s probe into the purchase of tarpaulin sheets and food stuffs amounting to Rs 2 crore within three days of completion of the probe.

Nembang-led special panel also directed the government to inform it about the reasons and significance of declaring the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley crisis-hit zones for another year, possible consequences of the decision and its impact on the people. The meeting directed the government to present the Post Disaster Need Assessment report within three days of its completion.
