Hundreds displaced in Kailali

DHAGADI, August 2

Incessant rainfall since last night has submerged hundreds of human settlements in Kailali district and inundated most areas in district headquarters Dhangadi.

Shivanagar, Bishalnagar, Bhansar Road and Hasanpur of Dhangadi Municipality have beeninundated due to the continuous downpour, adversely affectingvehicular traffic on the waterlogged roads. Geta, Srilanka and Mukta Kamaiya camp of Attariya Municipality have also been affected.

According to the District Disaster Relief and Rescue Committee, Kailali, dozens of human settlements at Munuwa, Janakinagar, Thapapur, Dhansinghpur, Narayanpur, Pathliya and, Pahalmanpur VDCs of the district were also submerged. Kailali Chief District Officer Ram Kumar Shrestha, who is also the District Disaster Relief and Rescue Committee coordinator, said the details of the displaced persons were not known yet.

The displaced have been sheltering in the public buildings, government buildings, schools, community forest buildings and other safer places,” he said. Locals said human settlements at Phulbari, Hasuliya and Basauti VDCs of Kailali have also been inundated. They complained that Dhangadi city areas were inundated due to lack of proper drainage system. “The city areas are submerged, as there are not enough canals for the water to move out,” said Birendra Malla, a local of Shivanagar.

Even shopkeepers reported damage after water gushed into their shops.
