Irate locals attack police post, cops flee
ILAM: Locals of Sukrabare of Danabari in the district clashed with police personnel yesterday evening and today morning. The locals vandalised a hut for visitors and hurled stones at the police post yesterday evening accusing the police of intervening unnecessarily in the name of settling a dispute between the Sitali and Sukrabare Bazaar locals.
In the ensuing clash, head constable Sher Bahadur Khadka, constables Sushil Tamang and Bishnu Budhathoki were injured. The police left the post as even after firings in the air they could not disperse the mob.
Meanwhile, locals of Sitali Bazaar claimed that the inhabitants of Sukrabare also vandalised their settlement. Communal harmony between the two bazaars has been disturbed after youths of Sitali assaulted a helper of a truck who had reached Sitali from Sukrabare. Sukrabare and Shitali Bazaar are a kilometre apart.
According to a local youth, though the police had settled the dispute, the situation took a turn for worse after Sukrabare locals attacked the police post. Armed Police Force team deployed from Jhapa detained Sukrabare locals Chhabi Acharya, Tara Phuyal and Dinesh Shah at around 2 am today in connection with the incident. The locals of Sukrabare, however, hurled stones in the police post while the police was interrogating the injured helper about the attack.
Following the incident, market places in Sukrabare and Sitali Bazaar remained closed, while vehicles remained off the road in Rajduwali-Sanischhare road section.
Further, a meeting civil society representatives, teachers and representatives of political parties ended
inconclusively today after the administration said
that it will lodge cases as per public offense act against the detainees.
The locals are terrified fearing possible untoward incidents. The guardians are also concerned about the SLC exam that will start from tomorrow.
