Irregularities mar Basantapur-Chainpur road in Sankhuwasabha

KHANDBARI: After potholes and cracks began appearing on the Basantapur-Chainpur road, also known as the highway of Sankhuwasabha, within a few days of construction, local residents have alleged that the poor quality road was resulted due to irregularity.

The 75km-long gravelled and partially blacktopped road, constructed with an Asian Development Bank aid, has started facing damage.

“What quality do you attribute to the road that gets damaged when cattle walk on it?” wondered Pabitraraj Subedi, a resident of Baneshwor VDC. Local residents said the blacktop came off when one tugged at it. They have accused the contractors of using poor quality goods during the construction, also blaming other irregularities for the poor outcome.

Most stretches of land acquired for constructing the road have not been compensated for. Villagers, who readily allowed their land to be used initially, now regret their generosity, considering the quality of work.

Road Network Development Programme (RNDP), which undertook the project, and an English expert, who offered technical advice, have been held responsible for the poor show. In 16 packages, a total of Rs 720 million will be invested in the project. Nine packages have so far been over, with seven contractors being cleared of their dues and responsibilities.

Bokhim Construction, which was contracted for constructing the 16-km Basantapur-Mudhe Sanischare section, is yet to embark on blacktopping the road. RNDP is accused of not monitoring the construction works. Kumar Babu Adhikari, district assistant secretary of the Nepali Congress, said RNDP had not cared for the quality of work.

Buses have, however, started plying on the Dharan-Khandbari route. Drivers have complained of difficulties in driving along various sections.
