KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Bimalendra Nidhi on Friday announced that the government declared Govinda Gautam, who was killed from the bullets of Indian border security personnel in Punarbas of Kanchanpur yesterday, a martyr.
Briefing the Parliament about the incident on the no man's land yesterday, Nidhi also informed that the government would provide Rs 1 million compensation to the victim's family.
Meanwhile, Nidhi also said Gautam's final rites would be held with due respect and his children's education would be sponsored by the state.
Condemning the incident, the Deputy Prime Minister said the government had already clarified its opinion about the incident.
He informed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval telephoned PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal today and expressed Modi's sadness over the incident.
Speaking in a different context, Nidhi said security personnel were forced to open fire during the United Democratic Madhesi Front's demonstration in Saptari district on Monday so as to reduce the loss of lives.
He said the security personnel opened the fire as the demonstrators attempted to attack them while they were maintaining calm.
