KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 11

As the winter engulfs the country, the temperature has started going down significantly in Kathmandu Valley.

The minimum temperature in the valley was recorded at 5.4 degree Celsius, this morning, the coldest day this year. The minimum temperature was 5.6 degree Celsius yesterday and at an average of seven degree Celsius for the past couple of days, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Today's maximum temperature of Kathmandu valley was 20 degree Celsius.

As the cold increases across the country, the department has alerted and urged everyone to keep themselves warm and safe from the cold.

Similarly, snowfall is predicted in some high hilly places of Sudurpaschim, Karnali and Gandaki provinces in the next few days.

This will happen because, mixture of westerly wind carrying cold air from the Himalayas and the local low pressure system will further plummet the mercury in the country. "But, this is a normal phenomenon during winter in our country, as this happens every winter," said meteorologist Manju Basi at MFD.

Kathmandu valley's average minimum temperature for the month of December is 3.7 degrees Celsius, while average maximum temperature is 20.2 degree Celsius.

Similarly, till date the lowest temperature recorded in the month of December in the valley was -2 degree Celsius on 31 December 1977, while the maximum temperature recorded was 25.5 degrees Celsius on 3 December 1988.

Today, Humla recorded the lowest temperature -4.7 degree Celsius, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 30 degrees Celcius in Bhairahawa.
