Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala, who lost the election for party president to Sher Bahadur Deuba, congratulated Deuba on his victory and said that although he had lost the election, he was able to establish his agenda and would start a new political journey from today itself.
Addressing a programme organised to thank voters, Koirala said he did not have any grudge against anybody, but if the party's new leadership repeated the mistakes that it committed in the past, he would not mince words to condemn it. Koirala said he would not 'seek spoils of opportunity', but would continue to work for the transformation of the party.
In the run-off elections held yesterday, Deuba secured 2,733 votes against Koirala's 1,855. A total of 4,623 general convention representatives had cast their votes. Koirala, who had secured 1,702 votes in the first round of elections, added 153 votes in the run-off election.
Thirty-five votes were invalid.
Coordinator of NC Central Election Committee Senior Advocate Gopal Krishna Ghimire said that the counting of votes for vice-presidents would begin tonight. Counting for general secretaries will begin tomorrow. Counting of votes for other office bearers, including the central working committee candidates, will begin only after votes for those in the fray for NC vice-president and general secretary's posts are counted.
