Locals protest to reinstate banks

GAIGHAT: Denizens of more than 12 VDCs in the district organised a sit-in protest on the premises of District Administration Office, Udayapur today. The villagers were demanding reinstatement of the National Commercial Bank and Agriculture Development Bank in Beltar.

Meanwhile, a delegation from Beltar, Siddhipur, Chaudandi, Basaha, Sundarpur

submitted a memorandum to the the CDO Mudhusudan Burlakoti.

The two banks were merged with the banks in Gaighat and Kanchanpur, Saptari, citing

security reasons in 2002. Chairman of the struggle committee Kumar Singh Karki said,” The locals have been facing difficulties as there is no bank in the area.”

He also informed that the villagers were facing problems in receiving remittance. The locals from the area receive Rs 1 crore remittance daily.

Karki added that business and industrial transaction of Beltar area, the second largest business centre in the district, was also negatively affected due to lack of the banks.

Coordinator Karki claimed that the people of Bhojpur, Khotang, Saptari and

Sunsari would also be benefited if the banks were reinstated in the area.
