KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 17
Police have arrested a murder convict who had been at large for the past 12 years after killing his cousin brother at Ghorai Sub-metropolitan City-19 of Dang district. He was arrested from Sangam Chowk of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality in Bhaktapur.
Prem Bahadur Rana was convicted of murdering his uncle's son Surya Bahadur Rana, 32, by Dang District Court and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2010. But, Rana had fled.
Rana, along with the deceased's wife Bindu Rana, had killed Surya Bahadur on the pretext of hiding their illegitimate physical relationship. Surya Bahadur used to work as a foreign employee in Qatar. During his twoyear long stay in the foreign country, Surya Bahadur's wife and her brother-in-law had physical relationship. But, after Surya Bahadur came back, both of them hatched a plan to kill him and throw him off a cliff to conceal their illicit relationship.
On the fifth day of Surya Bahadur's arrival, his wife had offered him heavy dose of some local intoxicant called dhaturo mixed with the local booze. After he dozed off, Prem Bahadur had strangled his elder brother to death, as per his confession at the court. Both of them had then taken the body to a nearby jungle and thrown it off the cliff to make it seem like an accident.
However, it was revealed that Surya Bahadur had died from asphyxiation, as per the post-mortem report. Police had then arrested his wife as a primary suspect. She eventually unfolded the crime committed by them.
However, Prem was able to escape police clutches after he was sentenced for 20 years' life imprisonment. Following his arrest by Thimi police, the convict was taken to Bhaktapur District Court and eventually sent to Central Jail to complete his tenure inside the prison.
