SARLAHI, NOVEMBER 26
A 55-year-old man died after setting himself on fire near the Dumdume Temple in Lalbandi Municipality on Tuesday night, according to the District Police Office, Sarlahi.
The incident occurred at around 7:50 pm at Dumdume Temple in Lalbandi-8, where the man reportedly poured petroleum over his body before igniting himself.
Locals who witnessed the scene immediately alerted police. A team led by Inspector Virendra Singh from the Lalbandi Area Police Office reached the site and rescued him, but by then nearly 90 percent of his body had been burned, police said.
The severely injured man was rushed to the Provincial Hospital in Janakpur for advanced treatment, but he died during treatment at around 2:10 am on Wednesday, DSP Saroj Rai, spokesperson for the District Police Office, confirmed.
He has been identified as Surya Prasad Pokharel, 55, son of Dhanapati Pokharel of Gauradaha Municipality-2 in Jhapa. The identification was verified by his nephew, Kumar Dhakal, using the victim's mobile phone.
Police have informed the family members and initiated further investigation into the incident.
