Maoists stop police posts’ re-establishment; Capture post in Rupandehi

Dipayal/Biratnagar, December 14 :

The Maoists are barring the authorities concerned from re-establishing the police posts that were displaced from eastern, western and the far-western regions, officials said.

Acting SP in the Dipayal-based far-western regional police office, Hemant Pal, said today that though the parties had given a go-ahead to the plan of re-establishing the displaced police posts, the Maoists were preventing teams authorised to setting up the posts from doing their job.

According to the regional police office, while some 11 police posts were destroyed during the conflict, 16 police posts were shifted citing ‘security reasons’.

Only two police posts have been re-established — one in Kanchanpur’s Kalari and the other in Achham’s Kamal Bazaar.

The Maoists’ Doti district secretary Sankalp said his party will continue to oppose the plan of re-establishing the displaced police posts until an interim government is formed.

Meanwhile, Doti secretary of the Nepali Congress Ram Prasad Upadhyaya said the police unit office must be re-established.

The Maoists are opposing the re-establishment of police posts in Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Sankhuwasabha and Ilam .

DIG in the eastern regional police office, Keshav Baral, said the task of re-establishing the police posts has come to a halt due to Maoists’ opposition.

In the eastern region, 343 of the 441 security posts were displaced due to the conflict. Till date, 93 security posts have been re-established, Baral said.

The Maoists have imposed a ban on the re-establishment of police posts in different districts of the western development region. DIG in the western regional police office, Pokhara, Ramesh Shrestha, said the Maoists turned back equipment meant for police posts in Nawalparasi’s Belatari. The police posts were revived a week ago.

They have also opposed the re-establishment of police posts in Sunwal and Bardaghat in Kaski.

Maoist Kaski district secretary Karan said his party would agree to the revival of displaced police posts only after his party joins the interim government.

A report from Bhairahawa said a team of 100 Maoist cadres led by president of the Madhesi Mukti Morcha Rupandehi, Ghanshyam Yadav, marched into the re-established area police office in Dhak Dhai VDC of Rupandehi today and sent back logistics of the police post to the District Police Office.

The Maoists also elevated party flags atop the building claiming that it was under seize.

On the occasion, Yadav said his party would not allow the re-establishment of the police posts unless the CPN (Maoist) is included in the interim government and an interim constitution is promulgated.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Maoist cadres staged a demonstration against the revival of the Sunwal police post.
