Memo submitted seeking statute amendment

Kathmandu, October 8

The Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal today submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli demanding to initiate the process of amending the constitution.

The RJP-N has been saying that the constitution should be amended to address the demands of Madhesi, Tharu, Muslims and Janajatis.

The RJP-N said that if the government did not address its demands then it would have no option but to withdraw support to the government and launch agitation.

The RJP-N said in its memorandum that its lawmaker Resham Chaudhary had not yet been administered the oath of office and secrecy. It also demanded withdrawal of ‘false cases’ slapped against political cadres during the Tharuhat and Madhes movement.

The party said that the central government had not yet separated the list of powers that came under the jurisdiction of provincial government nor did it create environment for provincial governments to work effectively by enacting umbrella laws.

The party also drew the government’s attention to the ‘increasing problems of law and order, incidents of violence against women, including rape and murder and price hike.’

RJP-N leader Keshav Jha said the four RJP-N leaders told the PM that if their demands were not met by Tihar festival, then they would launch agitation.  Revision of provincial boundaries is one of the major demands of the RJP-N and the Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal.
