Missing Indian climber found dead on Mt Everest

KATHMANDU: An Indian climber, who went missing while descending from the world's tallest peak on Saturday, was found dead near South Col on Mt Everest region on Monday afternoon, expedition organiser said.

Chhowang Sherpa, Managing Director at Arun Treks, confirmed that a search and rescue team of Sherpa climbers spotted the body of Ravi Kumar, a climber from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, some 200 metres below the climbing route.

The 27-year-old climber had been out of contact since he was descending alone from the Balcony to lower camps after successfully standing atop Mt Everest from the Nepali side at 1:28pm on Saturday.

Ravi failed to make it to lower camp after his climbing guide, Lakpa Wongya Sherpa, also fell unconscious after suffering from frostbite.  Sherpa, however, had managed to descend to Camp IV.

Discussions were underway to retrieve his body, Sherpa said.
