KATHMANDU, May 14

Monsoon rains will probably arrive in Nepal earlier than usual, this year.

Generally, monsoon onset in Nepal is witnesses around June 10th. However, it may be observed a week or so earlier this year.

On Friday, India's Meteorological Department made a forecast that onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be on 27th May, which is five days ahead than usual.

It mentioned that conditions for monsoon onset is getting favourable with advancement of southwest monsoon over South Andaman Sea, Nicobar Island and some parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, around 15th May.

Monsoon onset over Kerela is an important indicator of advancement of southwest monsoon, IMD stated. Other factors such as temperature, pre-monsoon rainfall, etc has their roles in it.

Given the same, the Southasian region, including Nepal, has witnessed surging temperatures and heatwaves over several places have been recorded in India, Pakistan since April. The temperature is expected to go further as far as 50 degrees in Pakistan.

Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had earlier made a forecast that this monsoon season will bring above normal rainfall to larger parts of the country.

Several areas are still receiving pre-monsoon rain and expected to continue likewise for a few days ahead.
